Mountain View, CA, October 10, 2002 The Wi-Fi Alliance announced today that Texas Instruments is now a member of the Alliances board of directors. TI was previously part of the general membership.
As a Wi-Fi Alliance board member, TI will participate in setting the ongoing direction of the organizations global efforts to certify and promote Wi-Fi wireless technology.
TIs addition to the Wi-Fi Alliance board of directors further strengthens an already broad base of leadership organizations, said the Wi-Fi Alliances marketing committee chairman, Amer Hassan. TI is strongly committed to a broad range of communication technologies. Their participation will serve the members of the Alliance well, continued Hassan.
TI is looking forward to making a significant contribution as a member of the Wi-Fi Alliance board of directors and growing wireless LAN market around the world, said Marc Cetto, general manager of TI's Wireless Networking Business Unit. We see this as an opportunity to leverage TI resources and experience in the wireless and consumer products markets, he added.
The Wi-Fi Alliance is composed of the worlds leading technology companies focused on unifying wireless LAN standards. Of the current membership, over 90 Wi-Fi Alliance member companies have one or more certified wireless LAN products more than any other wireless LAN initiatives in the world. Wi-Fi-based technology products consist of access points, PCI cards, PCMCIA cards, flash cards, USB clients, residential gateways, wireless print servers, and mini-PCI modules. Over 450 products have been certified since March 2000.
In August 1999, Wi-Fi Alliance founding members 3Com, Agere, Cisco, Intersil, Nokia, and Symbol united to promote the adoption of globally accepted standards for high-speed, wireless local area networking based on Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) specifications. Wi-Fi CERTIFIED™ products built to this standard operate in the 2.4 and 5 GHz radio bands. Unified support of these standards has facilitated the rapid deployment and adoption of these products to ensure global, broadband, wireless connectivity across the enterprise, small office, public access, and home markets.
