Mountain View, CA, April 7, 2003 - The Wi-Fi Alliance announced today that 677 Wi-Fi CERTIFIED™ products from 113 companies have received certification since testing began in March 2000.
Both the rate and scope of certification continues to increase, said Wi-Fi Alliance chairman Dennis Eaton. Currently, the Alliance is certifying almost 40 new IEEE 802.11a and 802.11b< products per month in four laboratories around the world. In the near future, the Alliance will also be certifying Wi-Fi Protected Access and 802.11g products. We expect these additional capabilities to add to the number of certified products.
It is also interesting to look at how the mix of certifications (http://www.wi-fi.org/OpenSection/certified_products.asp?TID=2) is changing. This gives us insight into how the industry will be using the technology in the near future. For example, there are currently ten 802.11a-only products certified. However, there are 18 dual band (IEEE 802.11a and 802.11b) products certified. It is also interesting to point out that there are five dual band certifications for mPCI modules (Wi-Fi modules that go inside laptops), which appears to support a trend for imbedding dual band technology into laptops.
Two years ago compact flash cards did not even exist, but now they represent five percent of the past years certifications. We are also seeing a change in the mix of client products being certified. We have seen the number of PC Card certifications drop from 54% to 37% as a percent of total certificates and the number of mPCI certifications rise from 4% to 13% during the past two years. The reduction in PC card certifications is the result of more products being shipped with Wi-Fi built into them. This trend is expected to be even more dramatic two years from now, Eaton added.
Products awarded the Wi-Fi logo have undergone strict, rigorous and independent testing at one of four labs in Tokyo, Japan; San Jose, California; Winnersh, UK; or Taipei, Taiwan. Testing usually takes two to four days per product to complete. The Wi-Fi interoperability certification program has become the international standard for providing high-quality interoperability testing for 802.11-based products.
